An experiment

Worked a little on the STCEO site clean up tonight but also wanted to set down some thoughts about things to consider for any future design.  I find the current web hosting setup to be awkward, probably because I’m not familiar with them and I’m having to dig around for some of the insider knowledge. I’m sure they’re a great host but, holy cow, for less than the current plan costs at the current host, we could be getting 40 times the space and 51 times the bandwidth at the place where I host my sites. Not that we’re using the space or bandwidth we’ve got but still…

Anyway, as I was poking around, I realized that stceo.net and stceo.com are up for grabs so I grabbed them.  I’ve redirected the .com to the actual stceo.org site (I got it just to “keep it in the family” so to speak) but I’m going to use the .net as my testing grounds for redesigns and additional content. That way I can play around with things without disturbing anything on the actual STCEO.org site or on any of my own sites. And if we stay with the current host but decide we want to use any of the extra stuff, we can always redirect people here to the .net one and it won’t seem so out-of-place.

In particular, I was thinking about creating a sort of webmaster blog, to talk about the site, the STC, technical writing in general and in the NCR in particular (that would be this one). And I was thinking that a forum would be nice — I’ve been in the Lyris mailing list that we have and the online archives are so awkward as to be virtually useless.  I looked at the notes for adding RSS feeds from STC and the new STC forum but I’m a straight HTML/CSS kind of gal right now — fiddling with PHP is a bit beyond my skills at the moment.  Still, it’s something to consider.
